SEND Learners

1. Introduction Orchard Academy is committed to providing an inclusive educational environment where all learners, including those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), can thrive. This policy outlines the principles and practices that guide our support for SEND learners to ensure they achieve their full potential.

2. Definition of SEND

  • SEND Learners: Students who have a learning difficulty or disability that requires special educational provision. This includes a range of conditions such as specific learning difficulties, communication and interaction needs, sensory and physical needs, and social, emotional, and mental health needs.

3. Admission and Assessment

  • Admission: Orchard Academy welcomes students with SEND and provides appropriate support from the point of admission. Information about a student’s needs will be gathered in collaboration with parents and relevant professionals.

  • Initial Assessment: Upon entry, each SEND learner will undergo an assessment to determine their specific needs and the appropriate level of support required.

4. Individual Education Plans (IEPs)

  • Development: Each SEND learner will have an Individual Education Plan (IEP) developed in consultation with teachers, parents, and the learner themselves where possible. The IEP will outline specific learning goals, accommodations, and strategies to support the learner.

  • Review: IEPs will be reviewed regularly, at least termly, to monitor progress and make adjustments as needed.

5. Teaching and Learning Strategies

  • Differentiation: Teachers will differentiate instruction to meet the diverse needs of SEND learners. This includes modifying content, teaching methods, and assessment practices.

  • Support Staff: Where necessary, support staff such as teaching assistants will be deployed to assist SEND learners within the classroom or in small group settings.

6. Accessibility and Adaptations

  • Access: The academy is committed to ensuring that its environment is accessible to all learners. Reasonable adjustments will be made to accommodate the needs of SEND learners.

  • Curricular Adaptations: Adjustments will be made to the curriculum to ensure that SEND learners can participate fully. This may include alternative formats for materials, assistive technology, or modified assessments.

7. Social and Emotional Support

  • Well-being: SEND learners will have access to social and emotional support services, including counseling and mentoring, to help them manage their learning experience and any related challenges.

  • Anti-Bullying: Orchard Academy has a zero-tolerance policy for bullying. SEND learners will be protected and supported in a safe learning environment.

8. Parental and Guardian Involvement

  • Partnership: Parents and guardians of SEND learners are considered essential partners in their education. Regular communication and collaboration will be encouraged to support the learner’s development.

  • Feedback: Parents are invited to provide feedback and share any concerns about their child’s education and well-being. The academy values this input and incorporates it into planning and review processes.

9. Staff Training and Development

  • Professional Development: Staff will receive ongoing training and professional development to effectively support SEND learners. This includes training on specific needs, inclusive teaching practices, and relevant legislation.

10. Review and Evaluation

  • Policy Review: This policy will be reviewed annually to ensure its effectiveness and relevance. Feedback from SEND learners, parents, and staff will be considered in the review process.

  • Monitoring: The academy will monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of the support provided to SEND learners and make necessary adjustments to improve outcomes.
